Sullivan County, New York Birth Photography: Watching Katelyn Become a Mom
I've known Katelyn almost as long as I've been a mother. My daughter was just a few weeks old, and Katelyn was a young teenager who picked her up and cuddled her in her arms. I later shot Katelyn's high school graduation and have captured photos of her entire family during a family shoot.
So when she asked me if I would shoot her birth, I think I almost burst into tears. Every photo shoot I do is special, and I always leave feeling bonded to my clients, but I can't lie. This birth shoot may be one of my favorites ever.
A family affair
I arrived at the hospital to a room full of family, including Katelyn's boyfriend and his mom, as well as Katelyn's mom and little brother. Katelyn's water had broken, but she wasn't yet having heavy contractions and both she and Chris greeted me with grins. Soon her doctor arrived with news: It was time to start pitocin, an IV medicine that can kick-start labor contractions.
It didn't take long after the IV was in for the waves of contractions to take over Katelyn's body. While she closed her eyes and grasped tight to the side of the bed, her mom stayed close, a hand on her daughter's leg to let her know she was not alone as she brought the first grandchild of the family into the world. For the grandma-to-be this was special, of course, but it was also something she knew she'd be experiencing all over again in a few months when her middle daughter gave birth to her own son!
Katelyn told me the photo she most wanted was the moment she saw her son. Before she even saw him, the love was obvious as they placed his little body in her arms, and so was the love of the brand new dad as he wrapped his arms around her.
The little boy—whose name was yet to be picked—was whisked away by the nurses just as Mom and Dad were getting used to his arrival. Katelyn's family watched eagerly as he was weighed and cleaned up. Don't worry ... he made it back to Mom and Dad safe and sound and ready to meet a whole world of people who couldn't wait for his arrival.
